The boys water polo team had high expectations for the 2010 season due to last year’s success and the return of six starters. The team had a long CIF run this year but wasn’t able to achieve in its goal of a CIF championship, losing in the semifinals to top-seeded Laguna Beach, 5-2.
“I thought that we played well; our defense was great and we were able to stop the Laguna offense,”
coach Jon Reichardt said.
The Mustangs had seven consecutive wins in their first 12 matches of the season, going 7-1 in league games and tying Palos Verdes for the Bay League championship. They also beat rival La Canada in the CIF quarterfinals.
“I was really impressed by how well this team played, especially because we lost 10 seniors. A lot of guys stepped up as leaders, showing their talent and dedication,” Reichardt said.
Senior co-captain Jake Miller led the team with 94 goals and made clutch plays, such as the game-winning goal against La Canada in the CIF quaterfinals.
“I really enjoyed playing for this team. We always had a good time and played our hardest in every game,” Miller said.
Costa’s future remains bright despite its losing six seniors. Juniors Ryan Koverman, Josh Huttinger, and Justin Pratt are starters who are all returning.
“We have a lot of talent on this team, and I am expecting great things for the next season,” Reichardt said.
