Since its freshman year, a tight-knit group of boys has been waiting for its chance to make a run at a California Interscholastic Federation title in Division I. Now, their chance to make that dream a reality is closer than ever.

“It has been amazing to have played with my best friends for so long,” senior midfielder Trevor Taub said. “They are my brothers, and there is no one I would rather make this run with.”

However, one big road block still stands in the way: the ninth-ranked team in the state, Paramount High School, is 20-4-2 overall.  The two teams will clash at 3 p.m. tomorrow. What the Mustangs lack in ranking, they make up for in heart and grit, two characteristics that have manifested themselves as ubiquitous in the soccer program throughout the years, Taub said.

“If we want to keep our run alive, we will need to continue to play with a lot of heart,” Taub said.  “We will need to keep the ball more than we have [in past games] and continue to play tough defense.”

Paramount brings a well-balanced team that is replete with natural talent and speed, senior center midfielder Max Taylor said. The Mustangs hope to upset Paramount by finishing every opportunity and outworking the other team, senior goalkeeper Ethan Hsieh said.

“It’s a great final experience as a senior,” Hsieh said. “Having teammates that I have known for a long time makes me more passionate and enjoy the sport more, and my teammates are just another reason for me to continue working hard.”
