The Mira Costa girls water polo team took on a difficult opponent in Los Alamitos on Dec. 7 at Costa’s pool.
With this loss, the team’s record stands at 0-1. With Los Alamitos holding the second-place title in the nation,
the 15-5 loss was anticipated by team members. Despite the score, several players excelled in performance.
Within the first three minutes of the first period, Costa was down 3-0. Nearing the end of the period, senior Marisa Purcell scored the first goal that Costa claimed, wrapping up the first period at 5-1.
“We did well against a great team. They really helped us grow,” said Purcell.
By the end of the second period, the score was 10-1. After a disappointing first half, the team began the second half of the game with a new energy.
“I’m really happy with our second half,” coach Jon Reichardt said.
In the third period, Costa played a more offensive game. A goal by sophomore Emily Milstead brought the score up to 12-2 by the end of the third period. In the fourth period, Costa scored three more goals with the help of Purcell and senior Natalie Lavinsky. Despite Costa’s best efforts, when the buzzer sounded, Los Alamitos was victorious.
“I really had to work hard for my goals,” said Purcell.
A few players made important contributions to the game. Purcell led the team’s offensive attacks. Another important contributor was senior goalie Emma Fiore, who joined the game in the second half and kept many of Los Alamitos’ scores at bay.
“It was a tough game but it was important for us,” Fiore said.
The Mustangs played against Arroyo Grande Dec. 9 but results were unavailable at the time of publication. Costa will play Eperanza Dec. 11 at home.
“It was good we had this game because it was great practice,” Fiore said.
