Mira Costa girls beach volleyball players, senior Sunny Villapando and junior Piper Monk won the Huntington Beach Tournament on Saturday. At the beginning of the tournament they played a total of seven teams in pool play which is when four teams play each other up to 28 points. The top two teams moved to playoffs and there was only eight teams out of two pools so it was automatically semi finals.
Monk and Villapando won the final round with a score of 28-22. According to Villapando it was a difficult game due to the rain and wind and it affected their ball control. According to Monk they stayed consistent throughout the game and remained calm and collected. Monk focused on blocking her angle versus line and siding out.
“Piper and I haven’t played together recently and leading up to the finals we were still trying to figure out our own system”, Villapando said. “Playing together in pool play gave us time to work together and talk about the plays and blocks we wanted to run since the teams weren’t as challenging as teams we face in playoffs.”
The first league games will be held on Monday, March 3 at 3rd Street Manhattan Beach against Palos Verdes. According Villapando they are hoping to apply different techniques that they have learned into the next game which is blocking and siding out.
“I would like to improve on my serve receive with the wind for the next tournament, Monk said.” “I am excited to go out and keep pushing, trying, and winning again at the next game.”
