Manhattan Beach Unified School District continues to work with the city of Manhattan Beach to create a facilities shared use agreement that will allow MBUSD to share its facilities, such as Polliwog Park, with the Manhattan Beach community when these spaces are not occupied by students.
The City Council and the MBUSD Board of Trustees both voted to extend the existing agreement because it is close to expiring, Manhattan Beach City Council member Wayne Powell said.
“[We want] to allow both entities sufficient time to consummate an expanded agreement that would be mutually beneficial to the MBUSD, the city and most importantly, the entire community,” Powell said.
The city and MBUSD staff have been unable to find a mutual meeting date to come up with an agreement, resulting in the cancellation of three out of the six scheduled meetings. According to MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews, the district wants to make the city more accountable for district facilities.
“We’re looking to change the agreements to have the city take more responsibility for some of the facilities that they use,” Matthews said.
