Mira Costa’s baseball team awoke from its pre-Bay League slumber Saturday afternoon, defeating Lakewood High School, 9-0, at home after falling to Culver City on March 14.
Junior pitcher Jesse Storey started the game and pitched the first five innings of the game, then senior pitcher James Tullio came in during the sixth inning to close out the remainder of the game. Collectively, the duo only allowed four hits. In addition, the offense started out alive from the start, scoring six runs in the first two innings.
“The team played really well,” senior third baseman Matt Beserra said. “We worked together, and I saw a huge improvement from Tuesday’s game.”

The team gained its lead early in the first inning, scoring three runs on a double by Beserra and a single from senior right fielder Kohl Titzler. Sophomore shortstop Chase Meidroth, junior designated hitter Dajon Liava’a and Beserra all scored in the first inning.
“We played great today; it was a great team effort,” Titzler said. “We really clicked during the game, and we hit really well. In comparison to the season, this was one of our best offensive days.”
In the second inning, the team scored again on a single to center field from Beserra, his second hit of the day. Following the team’s second offensive outburst, Storey went out and pitched yet another scoreless frame.
“As a team, we battled out there, and we got hits ruling the game,” Storey said. “We shut them down early by getting strikes in. I was confident that the defense had my back the whole game.”
Junior first baseman Joey Acosta hit a double into the center field gap in the fourth inning, scoring Meidroth, Liava’a and Titzler.

“We were more cleaned up with our defense and communication on the field was good,” coach Keith Ramsey said. “Offense was more of our identity today versus [our previous] game. The offensive approach was outstanding. We are a team that can hit, and today we were a complete team.”
The Mustangs, now 7-2 overall, played El Segundo at home in a double-header on Thursday at Marine Field, but the results were unavailable at the time of publication. They will next play an away game at Hart High School in Newhall tomorrow. In the upcoming games, flyball communication will be key to bringing out the true defensive potential of the team moving forward in the rest of the season, Ramsey said.
“We will be working on communication and understanding our roles as a team, and we will continue to move guys around on offense,” Ramsey said. “It’s simple stuff, but really hitting fundamentals is always important.”
