Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team were swept by Loyola High School 3-0 on Friday in the neutral venue of UCLA’s Wooden Center in a nonconference game. Despite the loss, junior outside hitters Dane Johnson and Bobby Barkley aided the Mustangs along the way.
The Mustangs lost 25-15 in the first game, 25-22 in the second, and 25-19 in the third. According to Barkley, the team played well in the beginning, but progressively began to lose momentum.
“If we played like we did in the beginning of each game, we would have made that game seem a lot closer,” Barkley said. “We let a lot of easy points slip away from us, causing us to lose our momentum.”
The Mustangs, now 6-3 overall and 1-0 in Bay League, will play local rival Palos Verdes High School at Fisher Gym on Tuesday. Barkley said that Friday wasn’t the team’s best performance, but they will be looking to rebound against the Sea Kings.
“Rivalry matches are always fun, and I expect this to be the same,” Barkley said. “If we play how I know we can, we should hopefully come away with a win.”
