The Mira Costa Choir program traveled to Europe on the “Enchanting Rhine” trip from April 7-15 to sing at several locations across the Rhine River.
The group traveled to Amsterdam, Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland. Choir Director Michael Hayden chose a variety of songs for choir to perform, including “O Virtus Sapientiae” by Hildegard von Bingen, “Vere Languores” by Antonio Lotti, “Jachzet Gott Alle Lande” by Felix Mendelssohn and “Lift Thine Eyes” by Felix Mendelssohn.
“I loved performing all the songs we have learned and sing in front of all who attended,” junior Macallan Laver said. “Everyone enjoyed the songs that they listened to.”

All different groups of the choir program went on the trip and a total of 60 students and 100 family members and friends attended. According to Hayden, he has been planning the trip for 2 years to make sure everything runs smoothly for this huge crowd of attendees.
“This was the largest tour I have ever lead in my career,” Hayden said. “It was also the Holy Week In Europe, one of the most revered times of year.”

According to Costa junior Phillip Wah, this performance is a great way to show the work the Costa choir program has put in. To prepare for their performances, the groups held rehearsals during their period, office hours and after school since weeks before the trip.
“All of the work we had put in was all worth it in the end since we were able to sing all of our songs to all the people who attended in Germany,” Wah said. “Since this was such a big trip we have worked extremely hard to get the songs to where they needed to be for the performances.”

The Costa choir performed in cathedrals and churches in Germany that are hundreds of years old such as Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany and Strasbourg Cathedral in Strasbourg, France. When not performing, students had a chance to tour sites, visit monuments, talk to locals and enjoy the European life for a week.
“It was great to see them in a different time and space experience good foods, great sights and again, our beautiful music,” Hayden said. “All of this made this trip so very special.”
