Mira Costa’s Model United Nations program will attend the 39th annual Huntington Beach High School Novice Conference on Saturday at Huntington High School.
Approximately 60 novice delegators will attend this conference. This is a novice conference, which means students in the second semester of the Introduction to MUN class will be in attendance.
“These conferences are great for us to develop our skills for next year,” freshman Tia Pappas said. “They allow us to learn how to learn debate techniques for much bigger conferences next year.”
Costa has participated in five novice conferences this school year. Costa will be attending this debate with partners, and they used class time to prepare.
“We use time in class and do question and answer activities for preparation,” MUN advisor Robert Timberlake said. “We hold students to a level of accountability to be well prepared for the conference”

Costa’s MUN program has been attending this conference for approximately 10 years. They attend novice conferences in order to prepare students for advanced conferences in the future,Timberlake said.
“Students will get a full day to debate and practice at the conference,” Timberlake said. “This conference is a good warm up to other larger conferences that students will attend.”
Costa’s delegates will attend the University of California Davis Model UN conference on May 20-21 to finish off their year. This will be an advanced conference and some novice students may be invited as well.
“I’m excited to continue learning and keep participating in this program,” Pappas said. “Next year will hopefully be fun and challenging since I may attend travel debates.”
