Year after year, senior Tooba Wasi has demonstrated the traits necessary to be Student of the Year. Her ability to perform well through a wide variety of activities that show her experience with leadership gained her the nomination for this award.

Wasi has participated and led activities both at Mira Costa and outside of school. According to Wasi, her success in academics and extracurriculars is attributed to her passion for leadership and cooperation.

“I felt very honored, grateful and excited to be recognized,” Wasi said. “I think the leadership roles I have across campus and my community service throughout these past 4 years helped set me apart.”

Wasi has been involved in Model United Nations and Orchestra for the entirety of her high school career. In addition, she founded two clubs at Costa; the UNICEF Club where members promote actions of the UNICEF UN Committee and initiatives of their own, and the Girls Advancing Leadership in STEM Club, which informs high school girls about the various STEM careers available to them and helps them gain the confidence necessary for success.

“Mira Costa has provided me with an immense amount of opportunities in terms of academics and extracurriculars, and the great support system of teachers here have always pushed me to the best of my abilities,” Wasi said.

According to Wasi, she is also quite passionate about the subjects English and Physics in addition to her love for humanities. These are classes where collaboration and participation is quite important in order to have success, Wasi said.

“A lot of teachers have made a difference, so I couldn’t even begin to name them all,” Wasi said. “They have definitely helped me excel in every way possible.”

In the fall, Wasi plans to attend UC Berkeley, where she will study International Relations while minoring in Spanish or Arabic. She hopes to pursue a career in political science, Wasi said.

“I think learning to figure out what you love to do and focusing on doing that has been the most important thing for me,” Wasi said. “For instance, I found my passions for political science and music through being part of MUN and orchestra, and it’s helped me figure out what i want to do later on in life.”
