MAJOR KEY ALERT! DJ Khaled didn’t deliver his finest performance at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival on Sunday, April 16th, but he kept the crowd semi-entertained by his plethora of surprise guests.

During his fifty minute set time, Khaled performed past and present hits alongside surprise guests. DJ Khaled performed at the Sahara Tent and was accompanied by famous artists such as Migos, French Montana, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross and A$AP Ferg.

This was Khaled’s first time performing at Coachella and is planned to perform again at Weekend 2. Khaled played old and new hits and even performed covers by other artists.

Notably, Khaled disappointed the crowd by cutting popular songs short. The stand-in DJ was clearly inexperienced or just lacked desire to perform. He repeatedly built up popular songs, which briefly pumped up the audience, then abruptly cut them off, which resulted in resounding “aww”s from the crowd.  Khaled lacked to astound Coachella attendees on his own and constantly disinterested the crowd with unnecessary remarks that took attention away from his music.

Preserving some of his dignity, DJ Khaled was not a complete embarrassment.  He did perform a major hit, “Shabba” along with rapper A$AP Ferg, reviving the crowd’s spirits and got everyone began to sing along. He also started strong with “All I Do Is Win,” one of his original hits, getting the whole crowd in and around the Sahara Tent to shout along the lyrics.

Another pride-saving moment includes Khaled debuting “Unforgettable” with French Montana and Swae Lee performing the song live for the first time.  While new songs do not tend to pump up crowds as much as classics do, debuting a song helped Khaled overall.

The only exciting aspect of Khaled’s whole performance was when he brought out popular rappers such as Migos, French Montana, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross and A$AP Ferg. These rappers kept the crowd hyped, DJ Khaled himself failed to contribute any substance to the performance besides constantly shouting out “inspirational” quotes and prodding the crowd to chant his name and his son’s name.

Disappointing the crowd by lack of entertainment was not the only issue. By playing popular radio rap songs, Khaled led his fans to believe Jay-Z would come out and surprise fans during “Shining” and Drake during “For Free” would make an appearance. Unfortunately, he failed to deliver, leaving the audience less than impressed by failing to bring out these two surprise guests and again cutting these popular songs short.

Overall, DJ Khaled did not live up to his claim of making Coachella history, nor does he have anyone convinced he will be headlining a festival any time soon. Khaled’s performance exposed how little substance he actually contributes to the music industry, only serving as a platform for deserving rappers to truly perform.
