The Mira Costa hockey team tied the Manhattan Beach Varsity 2001 club team, 3-3, on Tuesday, April 4th at the Toyota Sports Center. The Mustangs were able to capitalize on their strong offensive drives throughout the game, scoring three goals, but struggled to defend the opposing team resulting in a tie.

“I think we played very defensively and conseratively throughout the entire game,” freshman Lukas Balen said. “Our game only folded in the last minute when they scored.”
The Manhattan Beach Varsity 2001 team took an early lead 1-0. Shortly after a goal, freshman Harry Meisel was able to tie the game by scoring a goal in the third minute. Then, sophomore Michael Gallagher later scored another goal bringing the Mustangs to a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
“We played a great defense throughout the full 200 feet of the ice and we were able to block a lot of shots in that period,” Meisel said. “Our goalie Donovan Henry had played a great game and we had a great effort from everybody on the team.”
In the beginning of the second period, the Manhattan Beach Varsity 2001 team was able to capitalize on a power play by scoring a goal, which brought the game to a 2-2 tie. Senior Bryce Tournat then scored bringing the Mustangs to lead 3-2. The Mustangs were then able to maintain a solid defense which helped them control their lead for the remainder of the period, Balen said.

“In the second period, I think that our passing was great but we need to improve on pushing more to the goal along with getting rebounds in order to score,” forward Miles Hirsch said.
Throughout most of the third period, the Mustangs were able to maintain their 3-2 lead. During the last final minute of the game, the Manhattan Beach Varsity 2001 Club team made a close shot on goal ending the game in a 3-3 tie.
“I think our defense played well in the third period and the other team had only scored because they pulled our goalie which is very hard to defend,” Balen said. “We just need to improve on hitting the net more in the offensive zone, getting a few more shots, and retrieving the loose change around the net.”
The Mira Costa hockey team is now 1-1-1 overall and will face off against Palos Verdes High School at the Toyota Sports Center on Thursday April 27th, coach Bryan Mark said.
“I hope for our next game that we develop better as a team because we are playing a team that we lost to in our first game,” freshman Leslie Meisel said. “This game really showed that we improved entirely as a team as well as working together.”
