For senior Emily Chase, musical groups and  various clubs have helped her explore her passions while balancing them with school work throughout her four years at Costa.

Chase is an active member in Costa’s Soptometry Club, an all-girls community service group; Philosophy Club, which discusses literature and philosophy weekly; and the Tri Em Club, a group that participates in music-related community service.

“When I found out that I had been nominated, it was an amazing feeling,” Chase said. “I know that it had a lot to do with my academic and extracurricular success, and it’s a great feeling to have external validation from the school.”

Chase has devoted a majority of her time to the Music Department, taking part for all four years as a member of Wind Symphony and serving as Marching Band Drum Major for the past two years. Chase also serves as president of the Vocal Ensemble this year. As president, Chase travelled with other members to Europe this spring break.

“I have  put a lot of commitment into the Music Department, so music is definitely a huge part of my life,” Chase said. “I do not want to necessarily pursue a career as a musician. It is just something that I love as an outlet.”

At Costa, Chase enjoys Advanced Placement Psychology, as she finds the information to be applicable to everyday life, she said. Chase has also taken AP Music Theory and found it interesting since it directly relates to her passion for music, she said.

Chase believes that Costa has shaped her into the hardworking person that she is today. Specifically, she is grateful for her music teachers, Choir Director Michael Hayden, Band Director Joel Carlson and AP Music Theory teacher Mark McCormick, all of whom she said have positively influenced her work ethic.

Although unsure about which college she will attend, Chase plans to major in psychology and eventually hopes to pursue a career as a family and marriage counselor, she said.

“I like talking to people and care about family and thus marriage,” Chase said. “A profession that allows me to talk to people and most importantly help them is definitely something that I would enjoy.”
