Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 defends its good reputation.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stands out amongst all the other superhero films. It is fun, aesthetically beautiful, action-packed, and even touching at times.

The film was written and directed by James Gunn who also directed the first film in the series. The film’s budget was around 200 million dollars and came out nationwide on May 5th. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of many new films in Marvel’s expansive cinematic universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follows the ragtag team of space mercenaries Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), who call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. In this sequel the Guardian’s adventure follows them uncovering who Peter Quill’s real father is.

Above all things, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is simply a fun movie. It’s filled with well-timed jokes, pop-culture references, and 80s music. While these things don’t exactly contribute to the plot or character development, it makes for a much more enjoyable film that even those who haven’t seen the first movie can enjoy and relate to.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is also an incredibly gorgeous film. While the special effects are almost entirely CG, it does not at all appear fake or unbelievable. Even though the most expansive shots are of alien planets and unreal shots of space, it still feels very realistic.

As it is with superhero movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has its fair share of exciting action. There are many fight scenes and action sequences throughout the film, but each and every one is fun and unique from the others. The fight choreography is one of the best parts of the film as it helps create diversity in the action.

Surprisingly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is also quite touching at times. There are many scenes throughout the film that get emotional, additionally, the main plot is centered around father-child relationships. While one might not expect a film with a talking and foul-mouthed raccoon to be sad at times, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 manages to be stirring even with its motley crew cast.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is also a somewhat cliche film in certain ways, it uses a lot of popular tropes and cliches which often make films feel cheap and poorly written. However, it manages to not be overly cheesy. Since it’s a bit of a strange concept from the start, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 seems to be able to pull off these tropes in interesting and unique ways.
