In the California Interscholastic Federation Finals on May 13, the Mustangs’ boys and girls swim teams shattered four Costa records.

The Mustangs swim team swam in the Southern Section CIF Finals at the Riverside Aquatics Complex. The boys finished fourteenth, improving on last year’s 26th-place finish,  and the girls finished ninth, improving upon their 11th-place finish from last year.

“We all worked really hard as a team this year,” junior Andrew White said. “We persevered and managed to place very highly in California.”

Sophomore Alex Crisera led the girls in the 100 freestyle with a first-place finish coming in at 48.87 and a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke at 53.54. She broke both of her own Costa records and her own CIF Division II records in backstroke and 100 freestyle that she set in the CIF preliminaries on May 12. The relay team consisting of junior Mona Stone, senior Katherine Barnhill, sophomore Riley Farrell and Crisera set new Costa records in the 200-medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay, with eighth and second place finishes.

“We had a really solid showing as a team, and I’m really proud of the way we performed,” Stone said.

Sophomore Kai Bathurst contributed to the boys’ 14th-place finish, placing third in the 200 freestyle. White also finished ninth in the 100 fly and 14th in the 100 backstroke. However, Costa was disqualified in the boys 200-freestyle relay due to an early takeoff.

“The competition went really well for us as we all placed really high individually,” Bathurst said. “We were able to rely on our talent to consistently perform at a high level.”

Boys swim ended 5-1 overall, and girls swim finished 4-2. Several swimmers qualified for State CIF and swam Saturday at Clovis West High School, but the results were unavaiable at the time of publication.

“I was really proud of the way we performed this season, and we came together well,” Farrell said.
