If “time flies” is a cliche, it’s an apt one. Our flurry of production nights, failed tests, sporadic coffee runs and late-night candy binges have certainly flown by, but the fundamental truth of La Vista will live on. It is a labor of love, a student organization built upon its inherent chaos as well as its members’ ability to contribute in the face of such crises.
The enduring tenacity rooted in generations of La Vista members inevitably gears us for change. This mentality will prepare our upcoming staff for not only the coming absence of our 14 graduating seniors, but also the greater obstacles to come.
The foundation that our 67-year-old, nationally-acclaimed newspaper is grounded upon faces major infrastructural transformations in next year’s creation of the Media Arts Department, addition of new advisors and unprecedented rise in digital and multimedia journalism.
However, the prospect of change only further propels this organization, and the upcoming challenges will only continue to strengthen its members’ ability to confront, and conquer. You will learn to thrive under pressure and find humor in times of fear.
To Claire and Wyatt: it is your turn to roll the boulder. We have watched you write, edit, manage, and most importantly, lead this year, and we cannot wait to see what lies ahead of you both. Savor the uphill climb, enjoy the view and relish in the cycle; your successes will take you far.
To Mac: we are so grateful for your guidance, dedication and leadership over your 15 years as La Vista’s advisor. And to Mr. Zeoli and Ms. Valbuena: we could not be happier to welcome you both to the family.
Finally, to the new staff: don’t be afraid to swim through rough waters, pave your own path and forge ahead. As F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
