On Thursday May 11, the Mira Costa Mustangs lacrosse team played the San Marcos Royals in the United States Lacrosse Invitational tournament finals. In the first year of the tournament’s history the Mustangs were able to narrowly defeat the Royals 12-8.
In the beginning of the game defense proved to be important and the team’s looked evenly matched. The first quarter ended with a score of 1-1, and the Mustangs only goal came from sophomore Zach Rosenberg.
During the second quarter, the Royals were able to score an extra goal and take the lead. The Mustangs would need to make a comeback in only two quarters to win the tournament.
During second half, the Mustangs appeared to have more energy and during the third quarter they went on a huge scoring run taking a large lead into the final quarter.
The Mustangs were able to play strong defense during the fourth and win the United States Lacrosse Invitational championship. The tournament served as a losers bracket tournament for those teams who did not make the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, however the Mustangs proved they were the best in the tournament.
The Mustangs finished the season with a 13-6 overall record and a win in the playoff bracket. Although the Mustangs were unable to win the Bay league title the end of the year proved to be rather satisfying for the team.
