Mira Costa’s girls volleyball was defeated by Loyola Marymount, 3-1, in a best of 5 set series at Loyola Marymount High School on Tuesday. Despite efforts from top performer, sophomore outside hitter Kate Reilly who excelled on defense with her numerous blocks, Costa still fell short in capturing the win.
The Mustangs began by falling to Marymount in the first two sets, 25-23 and 28-26, but gained momentum early in the third game and won the set, 29-27. Throughout the match, senior middle blocker Alex Kelly led the team with strong serves and aced the opposing team’s lineup. Into the fourth set, Costa was unable to keep their momentum and lost 25-21.
“Even though it was not our best game, we still played with all our effort and gave it our all,” sophomore middle blocker Camryn Jones said. “We had amazing serves, kills, as well as a great defense and did great overall as a team.”
Costa’s girls volleyball team is now 1-1 overall and will next play against Santa Margarita High School at home on Friday. Starting next week, the will begin playing opposing teams in their bay league divison.
“We need to work on keeping our energy high and can’t start to get ourselves down and lose momentum,” sophomore outside hitter Katie Colvin said. “From this I believe that we will learn in experience and compete hard in bay league.”
