The Mira Costa girls golf team was defeated 196-209 by Palos Verdes High School at Chester Washington Golf Course on Tuesday. After a victory over North Torrance High School by a score of 225-227 at Victoria Golf Course, Costa was unable to keep its four-game winning streak alive.
In the first round, the team pulled out a close win over North Torrance. They were led with low scores from sophomore Yui Ogihara and junior Angelica Bigler, who scored a 42 and 43, respectively. It was not our best round but we played decent, said Bigler.
“Although it was a tough game today, I was able to get a few pars to save my score,” Bigler said.
After their 4th win followed a short loss to Palos Verdes. The team’s top scorers, junior Klara Nagy and freshman Juliae Shoda, provided a solid start with scores of 40 and 43, but in the end, Mira Costa failed to keep its score low. The Mustangs fell 13 strokes short of the Sea Kings’ total, with a final score of 196-209. The team was too exhausted after the first game to keep up the pace, said Maggie Weller.
“I hit a lot of poor chips shots and missed several short putts,” Weller said. “It was our first time playing two games in a row this season so it was pretty rough.”
The Mustangs, now 4-2 overall, will rematch Palos Verdes at Palos Verdes Golf Course at 2 p.m. on Thursday. With the Bay League coming up soon, we will learn from this loss and try to put in more time and effort, said Shani Waite.
“We are disappointed with the results, especially because it was against our biggest competition PV, but we won’t let this game discourage us from moving forward,” Waite said. “Hopefully, we will bounce back at Thursday’s game.”
