The Mustangs dug deep into the sand last weekend and came out with a win against West Torrance and the Palisades.
Mira Costa boys beach volleyball played six matches total, winning against West Torrance, 3-0, and Palisades, 2-1, in a Interscholastic Boys Volleyball League tournament at Dockweiler Beach on Saturday.
“In today’s game we were missing some players, but what we really did well was sticking [sic] together,” Coach Kyle Dentriz said. “Different players had to switch around, but all six guys kept their composure and battled it out for the win.”
The first-seeded team was made up of seniors Dane Johnson and Bobby Barkley. The team was quickly able to gain control of the match, leading them to win their first set, 21-9, and second set 21-8. They ultimately defeated West Torrance 2-0.
“We had good focus and nice setting throughout the match, but we wanted to hit tougher serves,” Barkley said.
The second-seeded team consisted of sophomore Jack Walmer and junior Lauch Farris. In the first set, the duo created a high offensive pressure and won the set 21-11. West Torrance’s offense was unable to break Costa’s defense as Walmer and Farris won their second set 21-6, defeating West Torrance 2-0.
“We sided out very well throughout both matches and made a minimal amount of mistakes which led us to the win,” Walmer said.
Junior Thomas Kretschmer and sophomore Sam Collins made up the third seed and won the first set, 27-25, and second, 21-14, against Palisades. The duo communicated well which gave them the option to side out multiple times, Collins said.
“We played really consistently throughout the entire match,” said Kretschmer. “I think we need to play better defense and just be more aggressive for the ball.”
Costa is currently 5-1 overall and the team will play Redondo and Palos Verdes this Saturday at Dockweiler State Beach.
“Next week’s opponents are tough, and there needs to be a tough and challenging mindset so the boys are prepared,” Dentriz said.
