Mira Costa athletes are running, jumping, and diving into the fall season.

Costa’s fall sports, which began their season in late August, is in full swing, and this year they are all hoping to claim the Bay League title. La Vista takes a look at the Bay League season, first tackling football.

“Right now our fall sports are in full swing,” Costa athletic director Stephanie Hall said. “In general, my view is that Costa sports are going to be phenomenal this year.”

Costa boys football returns for a another successful season after losing their final Bay League season game to Redondo Union last year. The team started its season off slow with three upsetting losses to Saint Francis 48-21, La Serna 21-6, and El Segundo 21-6.

“The kids work really hard, so we are just waiting for good things to happen for them,” varsity defensive backs coach Cameron Chow said. “I think we had some tough breaks the first couple of games and we will be better moving forward and hopefully by the time we get to league we will do a good job.”

Girls volleyball kicked off its season strong with a win against Edison 3-1 on Aug. 31 in its first home game of the season. After ending Bay League last year with only one loss, the Mustangs are hoping to redeem themselves after losing to Mater Dei in the CIF semifinals last year.

“I expect that this season we will be a team with a lot of spirit and drive and I think that we will be hard to beat because of that,” junior outside hitter Sami Underwood said.

The reigning CFI boys beach volleyball champions are looking forward to another victorious season. The team struggled through its second tournament on September 9, ending in a loss to Palisades 2-1.

“We’ve been very good at siding out and almost every ball served to us is our point.” junior player Thomas Kretschmer said.

Girls golf started its season with a loss to Torrance, but were able to come back and defeat Redondo Union on Sept. 5. The team ended their season last year undefeated in Bay League 6-0 and 11-0 in their overall matches.

Boys water polo played hard last year, ending Bay League 7-1 tied with Palos Verdes. Unfortunately the team ended its season early last year with a loss in the first round of CIF to Corona Del Mar, but this year they are planning to continue to get better as the season goes on, according to Costa coach Jon Reichardt.

“Water polo had a great game yesterday, although not the result they wanted against Mater Dei, which is one of the top teams in the nation,” Hall said.

This year is looking promising for girls tennis, who started its season with two big wins against Long Beach Poly and Los Alamitos. The Mustangs played a strong season last year ending 15-6 overall and 5-2 in Bay League, but unfortunately the team fell to Arcadia in the first round of CIF.

“My expectations for this season is to have competitive matches against PV High School and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School because they are two of the toughest teams in our league and it would be great if we could pull some matches over them,” sophomore Audrey Vo said.

Cross country had a very successful season last year with the girls placing fifth in CIF and the boys second, allowing them to be placed in division 1 this year for the first time. The team has already started out its season successfully by placing high in recent meets.

“In our first two meets, we’ve shown that we can compete with much larger and competitive schools,” senior girls cross country captain Katherine Elias said. “We’re hoping to come out on top in bay league, beat our main competitor Palos Verdes, as well as make it to the state level.”

Mira Costa athletes are running in the fall season with high hopes for Bay League.
