According to videos obtained by La Vista, a Costa student was allegedly handcuffed at last Friday night’s Costa varsity football game for violating Costa’s zero tolerance drinking policy.

Costa Vice Principal Stephanie Hall was unable to confirm or comment on the number of students detained by authorities, whether or not they were found to be under the influence or whether they were arrested.

“I think that the Costa administration does a sufficient job of ensuring students are not engaging in illegal activities while participating in on-campus events,” senior Geena Radville said. “There are always staff and police officers at every game making sure all students are not doing anything they shouldn’t be.”

According to the Mira Costa Student/Parent Handbook, it is unlawful for a student to possess, use, or be under the influence of any controlled substance such as an alcoholic beverage, or an intoxicant of any kind, on school premises or at a school-sponsored or related event.

“We do our due diligence to prevent as much as we can which is why in this particular instance, those students were not admitted into the game because we are trying to keep it a safe atmosphere for everyone,” Hall said. “I think there is always room for improvement so we will be working to make things as good as possible for everyone.”

Drinking on campus is a violation of Ed-Code [25608]. According to Hall, in order to ensure the campus is safe during on-campus events, the administration staffs security, hires an outside security source and has MBPD police officers on campus.

“[Costa will not be] implementing any new procedures after last Friday’s game,” School Resource Officer Jesse Garcia said. “If someone decides to come on school campus intoxicated there are going to be dealt with appropriately.”
