Football falls to South Hills 40-18

Despite a valiant effort by the Mustangs, Costa Football dropped its fourth game of the season to an extremely talented South Hills Team.

Mira Costa’s Varsity Football Team was defeated at the hand of the South Hills Huskies by a score of 40-18 . The game took place at South Hills High School on Friday Sept. 29th at 7 pm.

The first quarter was rough for the Mustangs as South Hills’ defense held Reed Vabrey and the Mustangs offense scoreless. South Hills’ first points of the quarter came with a field goal to put them up by 3. The Huskies offense kept rolling in the first quarter, with a strong showing from senior quarterback, RJ Sterns. The Husky offense added to their three point lead with two touchdowns to end the first quarter with a score of 17-0.

“ Their quarterback was a good passer, but also a great runner. He was extremely elusive and hard to bring down,” junior linebacker Koda Thormodsgaard said.

In the second quarter, Costa came back strong with an aggressive four yard touchdown run from junior Reed Vabrey. The point after attempt failed, leaving the score 17-6. Costa’s defense held the Huskies scoreless for the rest of the half, sending the Mustangs into the locker room down 11 at the half.

The Huskies came out of halftime strong, with a rushing touchdown, yet missed the extra point. Costa fought on, with Reed Vabrey Throwing a deep 42 yard touchdown pass to give the Mustangs some life. The Huskies scored once again, and missed their extra point leading them to a 29-12 lead. To finish the quarter, the Huskies forced a Mira costa safty, to make the score 31-12 to finish the quarter.

“We expected them to go 100 percent every play, and they did. We were head to head with them, but just lost our fuel,” sophomore cornerback Jackson Fischer said.

To begin the 4th, Costa was able to score again to make the game 29-18. This score did not phase the Huskies who went on a scoring run to end the game with a final score of 40-18.

The Mustangs now 1- 4 on the season will play a 7:00 pm game next Friday, Oct 6, against the Peninsula Panthers. Costa is looking to clinch their first league game win next week against the Panthers.
