Mira Costa’s boys water polo team placed second in the Henry Stuart South Bay Water Polo Tournament after falling to Palos Verdes, 9-5, in the championship match at home on Oct. 7.
The Mustangs went 4-1 in the tournament, winning against El Segundo, Chadwick, Rancho Bernardo and Peninsula before losing to rival Palos Verdes. The Sea Kings claimed the lead early on but the Mustangs took it back with a 3-2 lead at halftime. The Mustangs fell short despite last-minute goals from senior Ethan Chalk and junior Troy Gleason.
“Overall we played really well,” junior Clay Allen said. “We came together as a team toward the end, and we got to get a couple guys in that don’t usually play.”
The Mustangs, now 12-5 overall, remains undefeated at 5-0 in Bay League and will look for redemption against Palos Verdes, 11-5 overall, on Oct. 10 in a Bay League game at home.
“I think we are going to take [the game against PV on Tuesday] a lot more seriously because we didn’t come in with very much fire,” Allen said. “[Since] we lost, it is going to motivate us more for Tuesday.”
