Costa girls volleyball dug up a win against Inglewood keeping them in route for another Bay League Title.
The Mira Costa girls volleyball defeated Inglewood high school 3-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Inglewood. The top performers of the match included sophomore setter Jenny Jenks with numerous aces and junior outside hitter Sami Underwood with continuous kills in the second and third set.
“We got kids that have never played front row before and were able to play it in today’s game, so that was great,” said Coach Austin Rester.
Costa swept Inglewood 3-0 with overall consistency throughout the match. The team came away from the first set 25-8 due to their constant offense pressure, keeping Inglewood on their toes and unable to perform defensively.
“We shifted a lot of players around today and most of us were in positions we don’t normally play, but I think we kept things loose and had some fun winning,” said Underwood.
Costa won the second set 25-3. In the beginning of the set, the team kept their foot on the gas with a 14-0 serving streak by Jenks. Junior defensive special Malia Yuhl then lead the team to the end of the second set with eight consecutive serves while Inglewood was still unable to organize their defense.
“Our play was very good, we were very strong and consistent in the out of system plays and scrappy on defense,” said Jenks.
Costa won the third set 25-5 with the help of Underwood’s powerful hits that improved Costa’s offensive and defensive play. At the end of the third set, Underwood had nine kills that boosted the team’s morale and enthusiasm.
“We got a lot of workouts this week and will be focusing specifically on aspects that need improvement,” said Underwood.
The Mustangs’ current overall record is 8-3 and 6-1 in Bay League. The team will play Morningside high school at home on Thursday, Oct. 19. Following the Morningside match, the Mustangs will face up against Redondo once again to attempt to redeem themselves from their loss earlier in the season.
“We will have a chance in two weeks to beat Redondo, and the first time we played them I think they were surprised how hard we played and how organized we were,” said Rester. “For the most part we probably outplayed them but they were able to make some key plays down the stretch.”
