Costa’s spirited homecoming week culminated in a crushing 50-21 Costa victory over the Bay League opponent Inglewood Sentinels.

The Mira Costa varsity football team defeated the Inglewood Sentinels by a score of 50-21 at Costa’s Waller Stadium. Costa’s win on Friday Oct. 20th, keeps the Mustangs at a perfect 3-0 record in Bay League.

“We had a great balance of running and passing plays on offense, and were able to keep their defense on their heels throughout the game,” Coach Don Morrow said.

The 1st quarter began with a 70 yard touchdown run from Inglewood’s running back Teshawn White, quickly making the game 7-0 Sentinels. Costa’s offense fired right back with a 15 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Nick Carpino to senior wide receiver Cody Kallenbach to even the score 7-7. Before the quarter’s end, Costa senior, Cody Kallenbach, intercepted a pass from Inglewood’s quarterback and took it to the endzone to end the quarter 14-7.

“Our offensive line shined through the game against the big and physical inglewood defense. We were able to get the ball to our playmakers, and executed very well,” junior quarterback Nick Carpino said.

Costa’s offense struck early in the 2nd with another touchdown pass from Carpino to Kallenbach, making the score 20-7. On Costa’s next drive, junior quarterback Reed Vabrey delivered a strike over the middle to sophomore wide receiver Jackson Fischer for a 30 yard touchdown. Costa’s defense punished the Sentinels all quarter with an interception and safety to put the Mustangs up at 29-7. Costa ended the quarter with a huge punt return for a touchdown from senior Roman Pech ending the quarter 36-7.

“Throughout the whole game, our offense played great, we had especially great quarterback play,” sophomore wide receiver Jackson Frischer said.

Early in the 3rd quarter, Costa senior Evanson Frank Love added to the Mustang lead with an early quarter touchdown. An Inglewood fumble recovery with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter put them on the board for a quarter ending 42-14 score.

“Our offense worked really hard all week in practice to execute on both pass and run plays, and this worked during the game,” sophomore offensive lineman Hank Dunlap said.

Inglewood capitalized on another fumble recovery, striking first in the 4th quarter, to cut Costa’s lead to 42-21. Neither team could put points on the board until Mustangs quarterback Reed Vabre scored on a quarterback keeper to end the game with a final score of 50-14 in favor of the Mustangs.

“We had a great week of practice and preparation for their offense, and really stepped up from how our defense played last week against Morningside,” senior defensive lineman Max Stewartson said.

The Mustangs, now 3-0 in Bay League, will face the Palos Verdes Sea Kings on Friday Oct. 27 for their 4th Bay League game. The game will take place at 3 pm at Palos Verdes High School.

“We are really excited for the PV, game we are both 3-0 in Bay League, and are looking forward to playing them on Friday,” Coach Don Morrow said.
