The Parent Teacher Student Association awarded 30 Costa students at their tri-annual Student Recognition Award Ceremony on Nov. 15 at lunch in Costa’s small theatre.

The PTSA has been highlighting certain students who demonstrate outstanding behavior in class since 1986, PTSA President Robyn St.Germain said. Costa teachers selected however many students that they felt were deserving of this award.

“Teachers each selected students who went above and beyond in their classroom that year,” St. Germain said. “These students displayed exemplary behavior by helping others or doing more than what was asked of them.”

Students from grades 9 to 12 were recognized at the assembly. Each student was called up individually by Costa Principal Dr. Dale Students were awarded based on their character, not necessarily their academic success St.Germain said.

“When looking for qualities besides academics, being kind to their peers, being responsible and improving their class environments is important,” English teacher Lindsey Valbuena said.

As each student received their award, Dale gave a brief speech. He discussed specifically why this particular student received an award and what teacher nominated this student.

“Dr. Dale noted that I was commended by two of my teachers for this award and that my teachers appreciated my encouraging, helpful, and uplifting attitude in the classroom,” junior Cassidy Waterson said.

Students received a gift card for  Coffee Bean, Jamba Juice, itunes, as well as a certificate of achievement from the PTSA according to St. Germain. These awards were fully funded by the PTSA as long as it was within their $1000 budget.

“It was rewarding to be recognized for my academic achievements and motivated me to continue to be successful in school,” Waterson said.
