Mira Costa’s Latino Scholars Union hosted its Hispanic Heritage Assembly in the auditorium on Oct. 25, in order to shed light achievements by members of the Latino American community.
The assembly took place during second office hours and approximately 200 students attended. According to club member and event planner senior Carlos Lopez, between ten and 11 students began planning the event two months in advance.
During the assembly, guest speaker Ernie G spoke on how it was challenging growing up in a Latino household and how he overcame his challenges through God and perseverance. Ernie is a empowerment comedian who has spoken to over 100,000 middle school, high school, and college students. He has also starred on shows on Comedy Central, B.E.T, and HBO Latino’s.
“Being a part of this event was a good experience for me because I got to listen to a well known guy speak on issues that I can relate to,” Lopez said. “It was awesome because hopefully it raises awareness that latinos are not that different from other cultures.”
