The Mira Costa boys soccer team kicked off their season with a 2-0 loss versus Loyola high school on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at home. The top performers of the match included senior captain Keyan Torabi for his numerous tackles and passes in the midfield that strengthened Costa’s overall play.
A slow start to the match led the Mustangs to a scoreless first half. In the final minutes of the match, Loyola capitalized off a corner kick to put them in a 1-0 lead. Costa’s defense was then broken down in the last two minutes where a ball was played across the box and then finished by a Loyola forward ending the match 2-0 Loyola.
“It was a coincidence that we played a big time team the first day,” said head coach Gary Smith. “It’s just finding the starting lineup and the key contributors to try to be our best on the first day.”
The Mustangs now 0-1 overall will face Culver City high school on Thursday, Nov. 30 at home. The team is planning on improving their positivity and and possession of the ball for Thursday’s game, said Antich.
“I think the weaknesses we had were not keeping possession of the ball and not finishing our chances,” said senior midfielder Micheal Antich. “Our strengths were pressing the ball as a unit.”
