Mira Costa’s boys wrestling team placed 7th in its 24-team meet last Saturday at a regional tournament at South Torrance High School. Top performers included junior Tyler Gordon and seniors Will Curtis and Hanul Kim for dominating other opponents to place in their respective weight classes.
Gordon competed in the 138 weight-division and placed third overall. Kim placed third in the 170 weight class along with Curtis placing second overall in the 145-pound division. According to Curtis, he performed at a high level.
“I think I had a great tournament because I took the highest place on the team, only losing to a ranked 6th in state wrestler,” Curtis said. “The core of the team really came together and worked hard and placed well; it should be a great season ahead.”
The wrestling team will participate in their second meet of the season at against West Torrance on Saturday. According to Head Coach Jimmy Chaney, the Mustangs are working hard and it is paying off.
“I feel the team is well prepared for a tough tournament,” Chaney said. “We are continuing to train and condition consistently and learning more and more so that week by week we improve.”
