The Mira Costa’s boys wrestling team placed first at the Warrior Invitational tournament at West Torrance High School on Sat. Dec 2 along with Mira Costa’s girls varsity wrestling team who placed second in a 4-way dual meet on Thu. Nov 30 at San Pedro High School. The boys team had a total of 6 winners in their respective weight classes and the girls team won the duel by criteria against a combined team of Lawndale and Torrance, 46-24 against West Torrance, and lost to Warren High School, 30-52.
At the boys tournament, seniors Will Curtis, Jamie Krigsman, Joseph Smith, Hanul Kim, along with junior Tyler Gordon and sophomore Alde Nguyen pinned their way through the tournament, winning in their individual divisions. Sophomore girls wrestlers Fiona Thomas competed in the 150 weight-division and pinned all three of her opponents, winning the championship along with sophomore Cali Sheldon who struggled with one of two matches against West Torrance but bounced back managing to pin her next opponent to take first place for her weight class.
“I thought I did well, I tried my best and the results showed it, Sheldon said. “I just need to focus on keeping up my cardio and strength all season. Overall, I was happy with the team’s performance, especially since we won almost all our matches.”
The Mira Costa boys wrestling team is now 1-1 overall in tournaments and will next compete at the Andrew Pena Tournament at Irvine High School. The girls team will compete at the West Torrance Duel at West Torrance High School next Thursday.
“We didn’t lead this last tournament only because we only had 10 out of 14 spots filled due to injuries,” girls team captain Sasha Medvidovic said. “In the future, I would like to work on strategy for duel meets and we will do better in future duel meets once we are able to fill up our line-up.”
