The Mira Costa girls varsity soccer team clinched a victory against Santa Monica high school on Monday, Dec. 4, with a final score of 2-1. Junior Kayla Brunick and sophomore Ashley Stepczyk scored Costa’s two goals of the game, making them the top performers of the team’s second preseason game.
Santa Monica scored the first goal and took a 1-0 lead during the first half. In the second half, the Mustangs were able to make a comeback after a goal from Stepczyk, and were able to maintain possession of the ball for the majority of the second half. A final goal from Brunick secured the Mustangs’ victory.
“Once we scored the first goal, we picked it up” said junior midfielder Jojo Hoffman. “Everybody worked together to stay positive.”
The Mustangs are 2-0 overall. Their next game is against Lawndale high school Wednesday, Dec. 6 at home. The Mustangs need to work on improving their communication with one another in order to guarantee a better winning record throughout the season, said Hoffman.
“As a team, I know that we want to keep winning games, with shutouts if possible,” said Hoffman.
