The Mira Costa girls varsity soccer team put up a good fight but ultimately fell 3-1 to Palos Verdes during their home game on January 12. The game’s top performer was freshman Sydney Saypack, who scored Costa’s only goal of the game.
The Mustangs held their ground during the first half, keeping the score tied at 0-0. During the second half, however, the Mustangs were unable to recover after allowing two early goals, and despite a comeback with a goal from Saypack, Palos Verdes was able to score again at the end of the second half.
“We needed to move off the ball more,” senior defender Jamie Averch said. “We kept our head up and tried to pull it together.”
The Mustangs are 9-2 overall. Their next game is against Morningside high school on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at home. In the future, the Mustangs need to continue working on communication and movement off of the ball, according to junior midfielder Kayla Brunick.
“I think coming back from break it was hard for us to continue our style that we had in our previous games,” Brunick said. “We will get back to that standard very quickly.”
