Mira Costa’s Varsity Wrestling team defeated Santa Monica High School 60-12 at a home dual meet on January 16. Top performers included senior Will Curtis and junior Tyler Gordon who competed against a state ranked wrestler.
Gordon, also a state ranked wrestler, competed at the 154 lbs. weight division against Chikara Sakamoto. Gordon won the match by a decision 6-5. Curtis competed at the 147 lbs. weight division and defeated his opponent with a pin in the second period.
“I played the whole match very safe and cautious seeing that my opponent was state ranked,” Gordon said. “Overall I felt like I did pretty well.”
The wrestling team will compete next on January 18, at a dual meet against Beverly Hills High School. Until then, the team plans to train hard and practice taking more risks, according to Gordon.
“I feel like the team is doing very well and did amazing against Santa Monica,” Coach Chaney said. “I am really proud of the wrestlers.”
