Mira Costa’s Boys Wrestling team defeated Beverly Hills High School 44-30 at a dual meet tournament on January 18. Top performers included junior Tyler Gordon who won by technical fall and senior Hanul Kim who pinned his opponent.
State ranked wrestler Gordon, competed in the 145 lbs. weight division and won his match 19-4 by technical fall, a victory condition satisfied by outscoring one’s opponent by 15 points. Kim competed in the 170 lbs. weight division and defeated his opponent with a pin during the 1st period.
“My opponent was good; overall the match went pretty well but I just had trouble pinning him,” Gordon said. “The team started off a little rough but pulled through with a good win.”
The team will compete next on January 20, at the Millikan Invitational Tournament at Millikan High School. Varsity wrestlers with winning records are likely to qualify for the CIF individual tournament later in the season, according to Gordon.
“I feel pretty prepared for Millikan and hopefully I will get to go up against another state ranked wrestler in the finals,” Gordon said. “As for the team, we will win it no question, we just have to tune up a couple issues.”
