Mira Costa High School’s Girls Wrestling team finished in 4th place at the Lady Big Kat Invitational tournament at Capistrano Valley High School on Jan. 20. Top performers included senior Sasha Medvidovic and junior Allysa Nocum who routed opposing wrestlers resulting in a placement for their individual weight classes.
Medvidovic wrestled in the 150 lbs. weight division and finished 1st overall. She participated in 3 matches, the first two ending in pins and the 3rd winning with points 4-0. Nocum wrestled in the 121 lbs. weight division and finished 3rd overall with one pin and four wins by points.
“I followed the plan I made with one of my coaches beforehand and wrestled strategically; it really paid off,” Medvidovic said. “The girls did well overall but there are definitely some things we can improve on.”
The girls will compete next on Jan. 25 at a dual meet against Peninsula High School. Until then, the girls plan to practice hard, and work on conditioning as well as becoming mentally stronger which is a large part of the sport, according to Medvidovic.
“I think this was our best performance this year,” Coach Chaney said. “Our experienced wrestlers are placing in these big tournaments and our new wrestlers are winning matches.”
