The Mustangs failed to get the offense going, falling well short of the Seahawks and losing by a final score of 56-23.
Tuesday’s game at Redondo Union marked the biggest loss of the year for the Mustangs. Despite this, senior guard Haley Herdman managed to record a ten point outing.
“We started the game off strong and had a good first quarter but we were unable to hit our shots in the rest of the half which led us to being down so much,” Herdman said.
The first quarter started out slow offensively for both teams with the Seahawks taking an 8-4 advantage into the second quarter. The Mustangs fell behind after numerous turnovers and Redondo continued to pull further ahead in the second quarter, eventually building a 21-6 halftime lead.
“We played strong defense during the first half and only kept them to 21 points,” sophomore center Kim Waller said. “We kept them from using their bigs down in the post and restricted them for making key plays.”
The Mustangs began the second half by playing aggressive defense and grabbing many rebounds, but struggled to put points on the board and close the gap. The third quarter ended 34-15 after the Seahawks drained multiple 3-pointers. Costa made a small comeback late in the game, but it proved to be too-little-too-late with Redondo winning 56-23.
“Next time when we play [Redondo Union] at home, we will need to continue to hustle back on defense and wait for our shots to fall and we will have a better outcome,” senior guard Kira Escovar said.
Costa is now 10-11 overall, with a 3-2 record in Bay League play. The Mustangs will face Peninsula High School today in an away game. However, the results were not available at the time of publication.
“In the games to come I’m looking forward to hopefully closing out Bay League strong,” junior guard Juliana Chen said.
