Despite securing an early lead, the Mustangs were eventually defeated by Redondo Union 2-1 in overtime.

Mira Costa’s boys soccer team fell to Redondo Union on Tuesday at Redondo Union High School. Junior midfielder Pedro Rodriguez-Borlado, who was the sole scorer of the game and senior goalkeeper Andrew Fasano proved to be bright spots in an otherwise disappointing game.

“Everybody makes mistakes and I think one of our weaknesses is that we lose concentration for a few minutes every game,” head coach Gary Smith said.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start, scoring in the opening minutes. However, the Seahawks bounced back, tying the game at 1-1 by halftime.

“Our main weakness would be that we play too much through the middle which makes us lose the ball more often,” Rodriguez-Borlado said. “Then we have to defend more, [making] us more tired than we should be.”

An uneventful second half left the game tied 1-1, and sent both teams into overtime. Costa was unable to find an offensive rhythm in overtime, allowing Redondo to take control of the momentum. Redondo ultimately found the back of the net for a 2-1 victory.

“We could have been more precise moving the ball to create more chances and prevent the game from going into OT,” Rodriguez-Borlado said. “But we felt confident since we were dominating in the last portion of regular time.”

The Mustangs are currently 10-3-2 overall and 4-1 in Bay League. Costa will play Peninsula High School on the road today at 3 p.m.

“Hopefully at Peninsula we can be just as tough but a little more composed and have better decision making,” Smith said
