Despite amassing a two goal advantage in the second half, the Mustangs were unable to hold on to their lead, eventually falling to rival Redondo Union 4-3 in extra time.
The Mustangs trailed early in the game after the Seahawks connected on a corner kick. However, the Mustangs would fight back and eventually find the equalizer as freshman Sydney Saypack converted on a volley from just inside the box.
“In the first half we worked hard to create chances and connected well on our passes,” freshman Sydney Saypack said.
The second half saw the Mustangs go up 3-1 after goals from freshman Hannah Bruhns and Sydney Saypack. However, the Mustangs defense floundered late, allowing two quick Seahawk goals to force overtime and the eventual game winner late in the second overtime period as the Seahawks managed to prevail 4-3.
“We were playing against a good team and if you give them any room to play they’re going to take advantage of it and that’s what they did,” Coach Patty Perkinson said.
The Mustangs overall record now sits and 12-3 with a 2-2 record in Bay League. They will face Peninsula High School at Mira Costa this afternoon.
“We need to work on [our] communication, stepping to the ball, and finding our marks,” Saypack said.
