Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Peninsula by a deficit of 17 points on Jan. 26 at Peninsula High School with a score of 61-44. The top performer included senior Kelli Toyooka who led the team with her leadership and great ball control.
The Mustangs scored quickly in the first quarter due by executing their offensive plays, to make the score 15-5. The Panthers then started to knock some shots down but Costa’s defense and rebounds held the Panthers to a score of 34-19. Costa continued to play aggressively and scored another 27 points in the third and fourth quarter.
“We did really well pushing the ball and breaking their press,” sophomore Skylar Herdman. “Once we were on offense we were able to execute the way we wanted.”
Costa is now 12-11 overall and 4-2 in Bay League and will face Palos Verdes on Jan. 30 on the Mustangs home court. The Mustangs fell short to the Seakings previously, so Costa is looking for a good rematch according to sophomore Kim Waller.
“I think that we should get better at defense and continue to move our feet fast and try to not foul as much in our next game,” Waller said.
