Mira Costa’s wrestling team defeated Redondo Union High School 48-26 in a home dual meet on January 30. Redondo dominated in the first 5 weight divisions but Costa bounced back, winning 8 out of 9 of the last weight divisions. Top performers included junior Jacob Gordon and sophomore Greg Sevaston who pinned their opponents in their respective weight classes.
Gordon wrestled in the 140 lbs. weight division and pinned his opponent in the first period. Sevaston wrestled in the 145 lbs. weight division and also pinned his opponent within the first minute of the first period.
“I felt a little nervous going into my match because my opponent was cutting weight from 160 pounds but I tried to stay positive and focused on a way to beat him,” Sevaston said.
The Mustangs will compete next at the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Dual Championships on February 3 at Redondo Union High School. Currently, the team is ranked first in its CIF Division, according to Coach Jimmy Chaney.
“As a team, I feel like our lower weights could be improved but our coach is confident that we will win CIF when compared to the other teams, and I share his opinion,” Sevaston said.
