The Mira Costa boys rugby team was defeated by St. John Bosco High School, 24-17, at home on Thursday, February 1. Although the Mustangs couldn’t capture a victory against the Braves, Costa still managed to compete by racking up the score with multiple tries.
To begin the game, junior Evan Anderson ran fifteen yards through Bosco’s defense to score a try and give the Mustangs an early lead. Costa continued their momentum with a try from senior Jonah Tavai and multiple two point conversions from senior Kaden Loversky. The Mustangs fell short in their pursuit ending the game in Bosco’s favor of 7 points.
“We went into the game knowing that there was a chance at winning but it would be very hard to do so against Bosco,” Anderson said. “We played our game well but couldn’t score in the last minute to tie but overall It was a good game on both sides.”
The Mira Costa boys rugby team is now 3-2 overall and will next face off against in San Diego on Saturday, February 10th for the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs.
“We expect to show our opponents in CIF how Costa plays rugby which will be to hit hard and play a good clean game,” Anderson said. “We need to improve on our steepness on offense and our game plan; kicking will be a huge factor in the next games to come as well.”
