Girls water polo splashed their way to victory during senior night against Warren High School at home.
The Mustangs won easily, 19-8, at Costa. Junior Camille Lyter and sophomore sister Leigh Lyter lead the team, scoring five goals apiece.
“Because this wasn’t one of our most challenging games, we were able to really strengthen the plays we had practiced before and execute them during the game,” Leigh Lyter said.
During the first quarter, Costa jumped ahead with five goals from Camille Lyter. Senior Ella Pachler and Charlee Wickemeyer scored once and Leigh Lyter and sophomore Celeste Almendariz found the back of the net as well. Warren responded with three goals, ending the quarter 11-5.
“We focused on playing in the lanes and denying the pass, and we earned lots of steals and turnovers,” Camille Lyter said.
The Mustangs kept up their offense in the third quarter with Leigh Lyter and Almendariz scoring two goals and Maiken Pardon scoring one goal, ending it 15-7. In the last quarter, seniors Chirawan Murphy and Isabelle Chiu, Pachler and Leigh Lyter all scored, closing it 19-8.
“At that point, we were already up by a lot so when our starters were in we tried to practice running our plays,” Pachler said.
The Mustangs, this year’s Bay League Champions, are 17-10 overall. Costa played Righetti High School yesterday at home in the first round of CIF. However, results were unavailable at the time of publication.
“This is a big year for us in CIF,” Camille Lyter said. “We have a really strong lineup, and we want to dominate in our division.”
