The Manhattan Beach Police Department arrested a Mira Costa student today after Costa staff notified an MBPD Resource Officer on campus of a Snapchat photo of an airsoft gun pointed at other students on campus.
After the student admitted to “stickering” a photo of an airsoft handgun over a photo of students on campus, MBPD arrested the student for making criminal threats. The student did not possess a weapon, and the MBPD determined that there was no credible or imminent threat to students.
“Although there was no real weapon at school it is still a scary situation,” junior Connor Barnes said. “It’s no joke to mess around about something as serious as this subject due to the recent events in Florida and many other places.”
MBPD officers will now patrol all district schools for the next several weeks during the morning and afternoon hours. This action will likely result in this student being suspended for 1-5 days along with possible expulsion and any other form of discipline from law enforcement, according to the discipline policy on the Costa website.
“What this person may have thought was funny is a serious situation to others,” junior Sam Krohn said. “Joking about this issue can be taken seriously as we saw today.”
