Mira Costa’s girls wrestling team competed in the 2018 Girls CIF State Championships on Feb. 23-24 at the Visalia Convention Center and placed 25th in state, the highest performance yet for the girls. Top performers included senior Sasha Medvidovic, who placed third in state, and junior Allysa Nocum who placed 12th.
Nocum wrestled in the 121 lbs. weight division and finished among the top 12 in the state. Medvidovic wrestled in the 150 lbs. weight division, placing 3rd in state for the second time in her wrestling career, losing only the a girl ranked 4th in the nation.
“I feel really good about how I did, even though I also placed 3rd in state my sophomore year,” Medvidovic said. “My weight class was a lot tougher this year.”
Medvidovic finished the season with a record of 29-1, defeating competitors ranked 9th and 10th in the nation. She is currently ranked among the top 15 in the nation.
“I’m sad I will never get the chance to be a state champion but I am proud of what I have accomplished in my high school wrestling career,” Medvidovic said. “After the tournament, I was approached by a lot of colleges but my goal is to wrestle at UCLA next year.”
