The Mira Costa boys lacrosse team was defeated by Westlake High School, 17-4, at home on March 7. Although the Mustangs suffered a crushing defeat, top performer and sophomore Cole Garvey helped Costa hold a solid defensive effort against Westlake.
Throughout the game, Costa found themselves outplayed on both sides of the field losing most of their faceoffs and allowing Westlake to score 17 goals. Juniors Josh Maruyama, Jacob Fernandez, Connor Barnes and sophomore Dane Weber all executed on offense to each score an individual goal. Despite this effort, the Mustangs could not match Westlake.
“We played hard as a team, but we couldn’t possess the ball and execute on offense in the end,” sophomore Derek Svensson said. “We will learn from this tough loss and bounce back on Friday.”
The Mira Costa boys lacrosse team is currently 2-2 overall and will next face off against Newbury Park High School at home on Friday.
“Going forward, it’s important that we look at the mistakes we’ve made and correct them in the future,” Fernandez said. “Our main goal is to possess the ball more on the offensive side so that we can get more goals and give the defense a break.”
