The Mustangs swam to victory in the South Bay Invitational Preliminaries.

Mira Costa’s boys and girls swim teams competed in the SBI Preliminaries on Tuesday and Wednesday at home. The swimmers swam in a variety of races to qualify for the SBI Finals on Friday, March 23.

“Our team performed really well and I’m sure as the season goes on people are going to drop a lot of time due to their improvement which is exciting,” junior Alex Crisera said.

Sophomore Camden Strickfaden qualified in the prelims by swimming in the 100 freestyle and achieving a time of 53.23. Strickfaden also swam in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.53. Junior Henry Humbarger swam in the 100 freestyle but came up just short of qualifying with a time of 57:10.

“I had really strong underwater and break out strokes but my turns were a bit slow, also my cap broke right before the 100 freestyle which was challenging,” Humbarger said.

Sophomore Parris Mosteller swam in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55 and the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07. Juniors Kai Bathurst and Sean Keegan qualified for the SBI finals with their strong performance in the 200 and 500 freestyle race.

“My distance swimming was definitely my strength in the meet and our Coach Ali gave us a great warm up to get ready for the meet which helped,” Mosteller said.

The girls team had lots of success with sophomore Kate Kramer leading the pack in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06 and a 5:35 in the 500 freestyle which qualified her for the top 8 finals for both races.

“I think that I did really well on the 500 because I had a good, solid pace throughout the race,” Kramer said. “Something to improve on would be sprinting harder in the 200.”

Another stand out swimmer in the meet was sophomore Leigh Lyter who placed 4th overall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26:01. Lyter also swam in the 100 freestyle placing 5th with a time of 57:23 which led her to a qualification in the SBI finals.

“This meet was very successful and fun because I love spending time in between my events talking to new people and jamming out to music in the team room when it’s pouring outside,” Lyter said.

The Mustangs are currently 1-0 overall and both teams will compete in the SBI Finals on Friday at home. Costa is looking forward to continuing to improve each and every meet and is excited for what is to come, according to Strickfaden.

“One of my strengths was sprinting and streamlining really well during the meet but I wish that I had more stamina because I want to improve my long distance swimming in the upcoming meets,” Strickfaden said.
