The Mira Costa Badminton team fell to Diamond Bar High School 13-8 on Mar. 22 at an away game. The top performers of the day included juniors Eric Mei and Lulu Yu for their undefeated wins in the girls singles and boys singles events.
The Mustangs were unable to claim a victory in all of their mixed doubles events, as the Brahmas came out strong, sweeping Costa by scores of 21-18, 21-11, 21-12 and 21-12. With Yu defeating Diamond Bar 21-14 and 21-10 in girls singles, boys singles players including Mei achieved four consecutive wins to reverse the score to 7-6. Ultimately, Costa failed to bring home more points in girls doubles and boys doubles matches and lost 13-8.
“The background, lighting and slipperiness of the floor weren’t ideal for us to play our best,” senior Ray Kim said. “But, we tried hard and ended up with eight wins.”
Costa is now 1-2 overall and will next compete against Long Beach Polytechnic High School on Apr. 12 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. She will focus on improving the accuracy and consistency of her shots, said senior Audrey Mei.
“We knew this match would be a challenging match, but everyone played their best in their individual games against Diamond Bar,” Audrey Mei said. “No one in our team gives up easily, and we are satisfied with our playing so far.”
