Costa Boys Volleyball overcame Peninsula in an easy 3 sets.
The Mira Costa Boys Volleyball team defeated the Peninsula Panthers at home in 3 sets on Thursday, March 22nd. The Mustangs were able to withhold a strong offense throughout the game.
“Thanks to really good serve returns and digs, we ran an offense that Peninsula’s block couldn’t stop very well,” sophomore Dain Johnson said.
The Mustangs came out of the gate firing, converting on kills from their outside hitters and keeping the Panthers on their toes with a strong service game. The Mustangs finished the set with a score of 25-16.
“We were firing on all cylinders, Peninsula was not able to block us, only getting a total of 3 blocks on us,” Johnson said.
Penn took an early lead in the second set but was quickly outmatched by Costa. The Panthers were not able to handle serves and kills from senior outside hitter Max Cajuste. The Mustangs also had a great performance from Lauch Ferris who had some incredible diving digs. Costa won the game 25-13.
“I believe our exceptional defense was built on our blocking. It allowed us to move around and block,” sophomore Sam Collins said.
In the third set, both teams went on scoring runs and scoring droughts. The Mustangs were able to win the final game with strong play at the net, and from their outside hitters. Costa was able to fend off Peninsula’s attack late in the game, winning 27-25.
“We were able to win the serve and pass battle,” junior Thomas Kretschmer said.
Costa’s top performers included senior Outside Hitter Max Cajuste, junior Libero Lauch Ferris, and sophomore Outside Hitter Jack Walmer. Even though Costa had players who shined, it was a true team effort that led them to victory.
“Our offense was very strong and we were able to side out fast,” sophomore Jack Walmer said.
The Mustangs now 3-0 will face the rival Redondo Seahawks at home on Friday, March 23 at 7 pm. The Mustangs are looking to make a statement over the crosstown rival Seahawks.
“In order to beat Redondo, we have to stay calm, cool and collected and limit the number of errors we are making,” Collins said.
