Mira Costa’s girls beach volleyball team dug up another win against South Torrance High School, beating out their opponent both offensively and defensively.
The team defeated South Torrance High School, 3-0, on April 18 at second street in Hermosa Beach. The Mustangs proved to be a driving offensive force in all of their matches, resulting in a sweep for the Spartans.
“Right when we had stepped on the beach court, our team was ready to play and win,” senior Bridgette Chalmers said. “Throughout the matches we were able to ultimately work on our fundamentals that our coach teaches us and, as a whole, it was a great day because all three varsity beach teams won their matches.”
In the first match against the Spartans, the Mustangs came out firing with seniors Karina Myszkowski and Piper Monk-Heidrich capturing two 21-3 wins. The duo performed well on offense, racking up most points on good serves, Monk-Heidrich said.
“I am super proud of how we played during this past game because we took a lot of tips on how to serve into the wind from practice and applied that to the game,” Myszkowski said.
The Mustangs took the lead in the first set of the second match. Chalmers and freshman Natalie Myskowski finished the first set, 21-5, with good serves and a high energy, Chalmers said. In the second set, the duo achieved a 10-4 lead and finished with a 21-6 win.
“I really enjoyed this match because I was able to play with a new partner who really proved herself to be great and we worked really well together,” Chalmers said. “South was an incredible team, but was never able to outplay us to become in the lead.”
Sophomores Kate Reilly and Maya Harvey came out strong in the final match against South Torrance, defeating their opponents, 21-8 in both of their sets. Reilly and Harvey displayed a solid offense and tough serves.
“I think that throughout the whole match we stayed focused on finishing the game quick [sic] and not giving the other team any opportunity to get on runs,” Reilly said.
The team now stands with an undefeated record of 78-0 in dual matches the past five years. They will next play in a tournament against multiple schools on Saturday.
“This year, our team has a lot of committed girls and we expect to play well in order to win all of our future games including the Southern Pacific IBVL League and take the title at state,” Chalmers said.
